Frequently Asked Questions:

QDo you have medication to give my child in your office? (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, cough drops, anti-itch cream, triple antibiotic cream, etc.)
ANo.  Each child must have their own medications checked in by a parent/guardian (prescription, over the counter (OTC), including cough drops, sunscreen and insect repellant). Please do not send any medication to school with your child. Parent / guardian must sign in all medications. Bring them in a new, unopened bottle / container and that is not expired.  The Nurse's office does not keep any stock medications/ointments/over the counter products.
QIf my child gets hurt, can you provide medical equipment? (wheelchair, scooter, etc.)
ANo.  Medical equipment cannot be provided by the school, your PCP should be able to help with that.  Your child can bring crutches, wheelchairs, knee scooters to school in the event of an injury. You will sign a liability waiver for use at school (see the school nurse for more information).  Any medical documentation of the injury is also appreciated.
Q:  If my child has been to the doctor will their absences be excused?
A.  Yes.  With a signed note from your doctor, absences will be excused for the time specified.
Q:  If my child goes to see the nurse, will their absence be excused if I check them out?
A Absences are excused on a case-by-case basis.  Fever over 100.4°F, multiple / frequent episodes of vomiting and unable to keep food or drink down, abnormal vital signs, or signs or symptoms that suggest the student maybe considered contagious are a few examples of absences that will be excused.  If the Nurse, front office staff or administration team calls you and tells you the student needs to be picked up based on a health-related issue, it will be excused. The student will not be asked to call parent if your they need to go home. If the student calls / texts to request a pickup and states they were seen in the clinic / nurse's office and you decide you want to pick up your child, it will not be nurse excused. You will need to use a parent note or a doctor's note. If you have any questions prior to getting your child, you can call the nurse's office or attendance office. This is something that can be discussed on the phone prior to the student being pick up.
Q If my child is seen by a doctor and needs special accommodations for medical purposes, can you provide them? (bathroom breaks, dimmed lights, snack privileges, etc.)
A:  Yes.  If proper documentation is received from your physician, Christiana Middle School will collaborate as a team to accommodate your child to the best of our ability.
Q: Can my child bring a snack or water bottle to school?
A: ABSOLUTELY! They may not be able to have it in a computer lab, auditorium, or library. Most teachers gladly allow snacks or water in the classroom. There are water bottle refills available at the water fountains in the school.
